Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 in which he loved betting on numerous card games at a young age. He found himself becoming very aggressive in these particular card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little while and moved away to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were difficult as he would play many hours and don’t win most times. He made some additional money by being an assistant for the poker players. He believed he might boost his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and concentrate more on poker.

The actual improvement in his game began when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would regularly compete against one another. Howard had access into some of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his cunning thinking abilities. He used these strategic ideas in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

He also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she would always be asking questions about how to make the proper decision. He told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the best female players the poker arena today. Howard relocated to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in money games for the following decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
